People have been doing diets and trying to lose weight for at least 100 years but to the largest extent most dieters have been unsuccessful. As we all know many people have been gaining more and more weight over the last 30 years and often this can be explained using just one reason.
What is the reason for most diets being unsuccessful? The reason is largely one of exercise. As we become a more sedentary society our weight loss plans are more and more centered around what we eat, when we eat and what to avoid. As important as food is this what to eat mentality makes it even more important to look at exercise as the key to losing weight and getting healthier.
Besides weight loss, one of the big reasons that people diet is to get healthier and this is a very important goal to be working towards. Eating well is a very important factor in getting healthier but when you have gone as far as you can in improving your diet, then exercise is the only other option to improving your health.
So when I talk about exercise how much is the minimum and what should I strive towards?
Exercise to me means that you sweat for 20 minutes. You start your workout with a bit of stretching and a warmup and after this initial warmup the real time starts. Don’t kill yourself in your workout but instead workout at a high level. On a scale of one to ten with a one being the energy to walk to the fridge and with 10 being a workout that you can not sustain for even one minute then you want to be at a solid 7. This means that you are pushing hard and do not know if you will be able to make it through the entire 20 minutes but you think you can.
Once you have walked, rode, ran or rowed yourself to a decent level of fitness with cardio it is time to look at weight lifting. Weight lifting is very important in weight loss as it will be the key to increasing the amount of calories that you need to sustain ourselves. The sedentary lifestyle that we live does not make it easy to lose weight because out metabolism is so slow. If you start doing some weights and gain just one pound of muscle it will take your body and extra 50 calories a day to maintain that muscle, let alone the number of calories burned in your weight workout.
It is not too hard to become an athlete to the point of helping you lose weight. anything that you do for exercise will radically increase your calories burned and help you lose weight. Start today and in a month you will be in much better shape to help you burn calories faster.
